A516 Grade 380 (A516 Gr380) steel is a carbon steel plate for medium- and low-temperature pressure vessels. It is a strength grade specified in the ASTM A516/A516M standard. The "380" designation represents a minimum tensile strength of 380 MPa (55 ksi). A516 Gr380 pressure vessel steel is primarily used for welded pressure vessels that don't require extreme strength but require excellent low-temperature toughness and weldability. It is particularly suitable for cryogenic liquefied gas storage tanks, medium- and low-pressure separators, absorption towers, heat exchanger shells, low-pressure steam drums, deaerators, and various other tanks and pressure vessels operating at medium and low pressures, at ambient or low temperatures.
A516 Grade 380 pressure vessel steel plate is typically supplied in the rolled condition. Normalizing is generally required for plate thicknesses greater than 1.5 inches (40 mm). Grade 380 is a metric designation that is equivalent to the U.S. standard A516 Grade 55. In international trade and on engineering projects, both designations are often used for ease of understanding and interchangeability.
